Brother Pete,
Remind Dirk, that all of the local churches in the Bible have died, but the church of Jesus Christ goes on. It sounds to me like this man worked as hard as he could, did all that he could. He should feel no shame whatsoever. May God be with his soul during this time. May God also be with you as you minister to this precious brother and friend. Dirk might find out when he gets to Heaven someday that this was the Lord's plan and He used Dirk to be a blessing to those saints as they were closing the doors.

Doug:

I think you did what should have been done in your situation...now...what did you do after you made that transition? Thanks for your servant leadership and warmth!

Your blog reminded me of the church I pastored in Philly for 8 years. The people called me, because their neighborhood had changed. In 80 years it went from a German-American neighborhood to a Latino/black neighborhood, and because of my urban missionary background they (and I) thought we could be successful there.
We invited Bart Campolo's KingdomWorks kids in to run summer programs 4 years in a row, we had outdoor Christian concerts, an emergency food cupboard, urban basketball program... you name it we tried it, but the church was slow to embrace the community, very resistant to change, and a number of our older members were being called to glory.
By the beginning of my 8th year, I sat down with the church board chair and we talked about the future. I didn't want to be the last one out to turn off the lights, and I didn't want to leave one more abandoned building in an urban community. Our meeting caused us to realize that the only answer was to find a church who needed a church home and reflected the community around our church.
The Lord provided a contact with an urban pastor with the right congregation. The last 2 Sunday's: 1) A homecoming celebration; 2) A worship service to turn the building over to the new church to the glory of God. I worked myself out of a job, but it's the best thing I ever did!
