Fitness and More

Steve McKinney January 12 2009

Hey guys,

I just wanted to say “hello” and introduce myself. My name is Steve McKinney and I’m a Certified Personal Fitness Trainer, owner Fitness And More, Inc., and the Pastor, of Frontline Fellowship located in Granite City, Il.

I’m going to be a part of this website by giving some fitness tips and healthy eating habits. Now, please don’t panic! You won’t be tested on this! However, there’s a real good chance some of these tips will help you.

As most of you know, ours is a very stressful job. One way we combat stress is eating. It’s called “comfort eating”. We eat when we aren’t even hungry! The next thing you know you’ve added weight, your blood pressure is high and your energy levels are on the decline.

For example, my friend who is a Pastor (he said this is ok to share) called me the other day and said, “I’m totally embarrassed, I went to the dentist and they wouldn’t even pull my tooth. My blood pressure was too high.”

The interesting thing is my friend lost over 60 pounds with proper diet and exercise. Only to quit and put it all back on plus a few extra. Needless to say, he’s back at it, trying to exercise and eat right. But it will take time.

Now, here’s what I could do. I could play the “God Card” and tell how we’re the temple of the Holy Spirit and gluttony is a sin (venial if you’re catholic) but this is a site for war torn brothers, so let’s not go there.

Let’s go here. The benefits of proper exercise include stress relief, increased energy, mental clarity and overall improved health. I want to make sure you noticed I said proper exercise. You can overdo exercise and cause yourself more harm than good.

Read more in my free eBook, Fitness and More.

I’ll be adding simple exercise tips, motivation and some recipes to the site. Until then, click here to visit my online training site. Then, go and take a walk!

Grace and Peace,

Steve

  1. Steve,

Great advice already man. I left the pastorate a few years ago broken, jaded and WAY out of shape. Last year I started walking/running a little. It didn’t take, but when we moved to FL this summer to begin my next pastorate I knew something had to change. I started walking then running and eating more carefully. I’ve dropped 36 lbs and ran my first 5k on Thanksgiving day. I’ve never felt better and the stress of ministry has never been more manageable. I’m glad you’re on here. Keep pouring on the training for the pooped pastors!

  2. Hey Chris,
I’m really glad to hear of your success. Keep up the good work and let me know if I can help in any way!

    Hi Steve,
    Way to go Chris,

I also have been one who needs to be reminded and encouraged to get healthier. When I left my last pastorate, it was a long 20 months till I received another call. During that time I got up to 350 pounds. Big for a 59 year old man of only 5’8″.

After being here at my present church for about a year, the depression, and the feeling of failure subsided. In August I felt good enough that I knew I had to battle the weight.
I grabbed my Huffy Beach cruiser and started riding it around town. It must have been a site to see an AARP member wearing a bike helmet and riding around town. At first I even drew a few laughs and some even questioned me if I could keep it up.

I have gone from 350 down to 315. I get in about 25 to 35 miles a week. I know I can continue to work at the problem.

I have downloaded the e-book and looking forward to reading it.

Thanks for adding this much needed section Steve.

  4. Wow Clint!
Great job! I hope the book helps. Keep up the good work.

See if you can get some dumbbells and try following the beginner routine in the book. You’ll be suprised at hoe some added muscle will make you feel. It’ll also help with the fat burning process.

    All the best!

    Thanks Steve,

Just thought I would give you an update.
Lost 3 more pounds and now down to 312 lbs.

I still need to go to one of the larger towns and get some dumbbells. What weight dumbbells do you recomend? Is 20 or 25 lbs to heavy to start out with?

    Blessings
    Clint

  6. Sounds like you’re right on track Clint. If it’s affordable get some 15′s, 20′s and 25′s. This should be enough weight to challenge you as you progress.
Please keep us posted on your progress and keep it going bro!!

I picked up yesterday two 6 pound dumbbells. it was the largest they had in the department store I went to.

I figure I can start with these until I get to Charleston or Myrtle Beach. I figured while standing there that 6 pounds in each hand is better than 0 pounds. When I get heavier dumbbells I can still use these for walking.

    Blessings Clint

Just read my post. I should learn to proof what I send. The dumbbells are 5 pounds each, and this dumbbell typed 6 twice in a single post. Who says two masters degrees equips one to blog. smile
I will try to be more careful

  9. I’m 59 and I just started playing indoor soccer. The first night I thought I was going to have a heart attack. But I have a stethoscope next to my bed and I listened to my heart after I got home. It was beating strong but no irregularities.

I used to play softball, basketball and tennis but I started getting fractures in my fingers and I got a rotator cuff injury from the hoops. My doc told me to switch to non-impact sports so I started playing more golf and more cycling. I still crave that “burn” from the intense running, so I’ll see how long I last. I’m really only playing a few minutes at a time.

I’m also supposed to be a type II diabetic but I’ve switched to a plant based diet and my numbers are dropping like a rock. This morning it was 146 glucose level. I don’t take any medication. It’s the only thing that works. TOFU is your friend is what I’ve learned.

Well, I’ll keep you posted on what a 59 year old man can do.
